The Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) traces its origins back to 1968 when it was established as the East African School of Posts and Telecommunications in Kampala. Initially, the institution focused on providing training for telecommunications and postal services personnel within the East African Community.
Following the dissolution of the East African Community in 1977, the school transitioned to the Uganda Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (UPTC), continuing to serve as the premier training center for telecommunications and postal services in Uganda. In 1991, with the liberalization and growth of the telecommunications sector, the institution expanded its curriculum to include broader ICT training, reflecting the increasing importance of technology in various sectors.
In 2005, the school was rebranded as the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) to align with the nation’s vision of becoming a knowledge-based economy. UICT became an autonomous public tertiary institution under the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology & National Guidance. This transformation marked a significant milestone, broadening its mandate to include training in information technology, communications, and digital innovation.
Today, UICT stands as a leading institution in ICT education in Uganda, offering a range of Diploma and Certificate programs designed to equip students with practical skills for the digital age. The institute continues to play a critical role in advancing digital transformation and fostering innovation in Uganda’s ICT sector.
