πŸŽ“ Academic Institutions Urged to Strengthen Alumni Connections

Academic institutions have been called upon to prioritise strong connections with their alumni networks as a strategic move to boost academic excellence, mentorship opportunities, and employment creation.

Speaking at the 25th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming event at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT) in Nakawa on February 24, 2025, Dr. Irene Nakiyimba, Deputy Principal at UICT, emphasized that alumni are not just graduatesβ€”they are strategic assets capable of transforming the future of education and employment.

β€œAlumni groups are rich entities that need to be well utilised to foster academic excellence and create employment opportunities,” she said.

🎯 Alumni as Catalysts for Transformation

Dr. Nakiyimba noted that many institutions across the country have greatly benefited from the influence and support of their alumni networks. She cited Makerere University’s Convocation as a shining example of how a well-organized alumni body can contribute to academic prestige and financial support.

At UICT, the administration has taken a proactive step by creating a dedicated Alumni Office, which facilitates:

  • Career linkage and job placement
  • Mentorship and coaching sessions
  • Professional networking
  • Alumni-led training programs

β€œWe have seen this same office support learners through mentorship and training programmes. Many of our students have been linked to the job world thanks to these connections,” Dr. Nakiyimba added.

🀝 Strengthening Ties, Creating Opportunities

The event, which brought together former graduates, faculty, and partners, also featured a powerful call to action: alumni must stay engaged and continuously upskill. Nakiyimba encouraged graduates to leverage the wealth of their networks, noting that personal and professional growth often lies in connectivity, not just credentials.

β€œYour wealth is not in your education alone, but also in your connectivity,” she told the alumni in attendance.

πŸ“š A Lifelong Learning Ecosystem

Dean Munene, Chairperson of the UICT Governing Council, also addressed the alumni, urging them to continue their learning journeys and take advantage of short courses and advanced programs available at UICT and other institutions.

β€œWe encourage you to take on more courses to advance your career growth and remain competitive in today’s fast-changing tech and business landscape,” Munene emphasized.

🌐 Looking Ahead

As Uganda’s education sector continues to evolve in the digital age, the role of alumni networks is becoming more critical. Institutions that foster these connections will not only empower their graduates but also build bridges to industry, innovation, and impact.

The UICT alumni homecoming stands as a reminder that education does not end at graduationβ€”it transforms into a lifelong partnership for growth, innovation, and national development.
